Sapelo
Voices explores and documents life during
the first half of the 20th century in
Saltwater Geechee communities on Sapelo
Island, Georgia. Following a detailed
overview of the fascinating history
and archaeology of Geechee communities
on the island, beginning with the mid-1700s,
transcripts are presented of anthropological
interviews with twelve of Sapelo's elderly
residents. These revealing interviews,
conducted in 1992, provide many interesting
stories of island life as well as rich
insights into Gullah culture and Geechee
heritage on Sapelo Island. All proceeds
from the sale of this book will be used
for the restoration of the Farmers Alliance
Hall in the Hog Hammock Community on
Sapelo Island.
