A Message from our President

Mr. Charles H. HallIt is a pleasure to welcome you to the Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society, Inc. (SICARS) website. I encourage you to explore these pages to learn about our mission and values. Through diverse events and educational experiences for people of all ages, SICARS plays an important role in preserving the Gullah/Geechee community on Sapelo Island, the last intact community in the Sea Islands of Georgia. The State of Georgia entered the Gullah/Geechee community on Sapelo Island into the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. In 2006, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division, recognized SICARS for “outstanding contributions to the historic preservation in Georgia.” In 1994, SICARS was incorporated as a nonprofit organization.

Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of patrons, supporters, volunteers, and friends over the years, SICARS remains committed to providing cultural experiences to diverse audiences. This makes Sapelo Island and the Gullah/Geechee community, a historic tourist attraction. Your patronage and support help keep the Gullah/Geechee culture alive.

I hope you will explore this site to learn more about Sapelo Island Diaspora’s history. Plan to visit our yearly events:

1) June 23, 2007, Reflection, Relaxation and Celebration by the Sea on Sapelo Island

2) October 20, 2007 Cultural Day - one of the finest expressions
of the Gullah/ Geechee culture.

In addition to the annual events this year, we are forging ahead with our plans to actualize our Cultural Village. Additionally, the restoration of the Farmers Alliance Hall, which dates back to 1929, is now in progress.

Thank you for visiting us on line today. As we strive to serve the community through our cultural and educational programs and projects, I hope you will let us know if you have any ideas or ways we can enhance your experience. I appreciate your interest in discovering more about Sapelo Island and the events, activities, and projects of SICARS. I invite your involvement to keep the uniqueness of the Gullah/Geechee community and Sapelo Island alive in years ahead for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Charles H. Hall
President
